Klay Thompson Shatters 3-Point Record for Franchise, Makes Mavs Debut with 22 Points

The Dallas Mavericks began their season with a victorious 120-109 win over the San Antonio Spurs, largely attributable to strong performances by Luka Dončić, Klay Thompson, and Kyrie Irving. Dončić led the Mavericks with 28 points and 10 rebounds, supported by Thompson who, in his Dallas debut, added 22 points. Irving contributed 15 points as a representative of the reigning Western Conference Champions. This winning trio not only showcased their offensive prowess but also their defensive aptitude, causing a series of turnovers in the third quarter.

On the Spurs side, Victor Wembanyama had a challenging time, scoring only 17 points from 5 out of 18 attempts from the field. Despite this, it was a solid start for the young Frenchman’s second year with the Spurs. Teammates Jeremy Sochan and Julian Champagnie displayed decent performances, each scoring 18 points. However, the highlight of the evening for the Spurs was undoubtedly Chris Paul’s San Antonio debut, which came as a boon for the young team seeking to put an end to a five-season playoff drought.

Throughout the game, Thompson’s first match with the Mavericks took center stage. However, Paul’s debut for the Spurs marked the start of his 20th season, an important moment for the franchise in cultivating a young team aiming to put a halt to a five-year playoff drought. Even though the team’s offense appeared rough, and Paul’s only points were from a three-pointer in the third quarter, his long-term value was evident through his eight assists and seven rebounds.

Dallas maintained a sharp focus on defense throughout the game, with their offensive trio of Dončić, Irving, and Thompson. This emphasis was reflected in the third quarter when Dallas compelled three successive San Antonio turnovers. Thompson executed the first steal, Irving the subsequent two, yielding Dallas just two points. It was a glimpse into the defensive potential Dallas holds with its star offensive talent.

Perhaps the most significant moment of the game was when the Mavericks extended their lead to 69-55 in the third quarter. In what could be considered the play of the game, Dončić, amidst heavy defensive pressure, audaciously threw a blind pass over his head to P.J. Washington Jr., who enthusiastically converted an open 3-pointer.

As the game progressed, Dallas saw a drastic improvement in their long-range shooting. After a subpar first-half performance of 6 for 23 from beyond the arc, the team heated up, making 13 of 18 three-point shots in the second half. This sudden offensive surge aided the Mavericks in securing their victory over the Spurs. Looking ahead, The Spurs will host back-to-back home games against Houston, while the Mavericks will play their first road game against Phoenix, both on Saturday.
