Kim Kardashian advocates for the release of the Menendez brothers in personal essay: ‘They are not monsters’

Kim Kardashian recently expressed her support for Erik and Lyle Menendez, who were convicted in 1996 for the 1989 murders of their parents. In a personal essay published by NBC News, Kardashian advocated for the reconsideration of the brothers’ life sentences, stating that she believes they are not monsters. She felt that the media attention surrounding the case caused the brothers to be condemned even before their trial began.

According to Kardashian, the brothers, who were 19 and 21 at the time of the murders, were unfairly portrayed by the media as arrogant, rich kids who killed their parents out of greed. She argued that the brothers acted out of self-defense, as they had allegedly endured years of abuse and lived in fear for their lives. Kardashian emphasized that the public perception of the brothers was devoid of empathy and sympathy and called for a reevaluation of the case.

The Skims founder described Erik and Lyle as kind, intelligent, and honest men who have exemplary disciplinary records in prison. She noted that they both have multiple college degrees and work as caregivers, highlighting the positive impact they have had while incarcerated. Kardashian pointed out that the public’s awareness of male sexual abuse was minimal at the time of the trial, suggesting that the brothers’ claims of abuse would have been taken more seriously if they had been girls.

Kardashian believes that the outcome of the Menendez brothers’ trials would be significantly different if they were tried today. LA District Attorney George Gascón announced that his office would be reviewing the case over 20 years later, citing a moral and ethical obligation to reexamine the evidence. While Gascón did not specify which aspects of the case would be under review, it was implied that the office would be looking into the sexual abuse claims made by the brothers.

In conclusion, Kardashian expressed her belief that spending their entire natural lives incarcerated was not the right punishment for the complex case of the Menendez brothers. She called for a reconsideration of their life sentences and highlighted the need for empathy and understanding in cases involving trauma and abuse. By bringing attention to the brothers’ situation, Kardashian hopes to see a more fair and just outcome in their case.
