Kentucky’s tourism industry hit a record-setting pace in 2023, with an economic impact of nearly $14 billion. This industry also sustained nearly 100,000 jobs, according to Governor Andy Beshear. The state saw an increase in travelers spending, with $9.7 billion spent by visitors in 2023. Beshear highlighted the importance of tourism as a key contributor to Kentucky’s economy and encouraged families to consider moving to the state to take advantage of the opportunities it offers.

Tourism in Kentucky includes a variety of attractions such as horse farms, bourbon distilleries, outdoor adventures, history, art, and culture. The state is also home to Mammoth Cave National Park. Bourbon tourism specifically has been thriving, with over 2.5 million visitors on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail and the Kentucky Bourbon Trail Craft Tour. The president of the Kentucky Distillers’ Association, Eric Gregory, noted that bourbon tourism has been revitalizing Main Streets across the state and bringing in revenue to local communities.

Spirit makers in Kentucky have made significant investments in new or expanded visitor centers to showcase the heritage of the bourbon industry and provide guests with an immersive experience. Communities across the state have seen robust numbers in tourism, contributing to the overall economic impact of the industry. Jefferson County, which includes Louisville, generated $4.2 billion in economic impact from tourism, while Boone, Campbell, and Kenton counties combined saw $2.1 billion in impact. Fayette County, home to Lexington, saw $1.6 billion in economic impact, while Warren County and McCracken County also benefited from tourism revenue.

State Tourism Commissioner Mike Mangeot expressed gratitude towards tourism officials statewide and the leisure and hospitality industry workers who have played a crucial role in the success of the sector. He emphasized the importance of these frontline workers, including tour guides, restaurant staff, hotel employees, and others, in serving as ambassadors for the state and welcoming visitors from all over. The tourism industry in Kentucky continues to grow and thrive, showcasing the diverse offerings and attractions that the state has to offer to travelers.
