Kenny Dillingham of ASU Accepts Deal to Become One of the Highest-Paid Coaches in Big 12

Arizona State head coach, Kenny Dillingham, celebrated on the eve of the team’s biggest game in recent years by agreeing to a five-year extension to remain in Tempe. The new contract brings Dillingham in line with the highest-paid coaches in the Big 12 and provides a framework for extending his contract for up to 10 seasons. Although the exact sum of the contract has not been disclosed, Dillingham’s praiseworthy performance levels and his capability of turning around the fortunes of his alma mater in just two seasons make him deserving of it.

At 34, Dillingham had the distinction of being the youngest head coach in the FBS when he took over an Arizona State program grappling with issues last year. The Sun Devils faced numerous injuries in his first season while also dealing with an NCAA investigation regarding recruitment practices by the previous coach, Herm Edwards. Despite all the setbacks, Dillingham set out on an ambitious path to turn the tide for Arizona State.

Embodying energy and enthusiasm, Dillingham made wise decisions throughout the season, one of them being signing quarterback Sam Leavitt from the transfer portal. Under his leadership, the team managed to win six straight games and made it to the CFP for the first time. Additionally, his effective utilization of running back Cam Skattebo, who subsequently finished fifth in the Heisman Trophy vote, shows Dillingham’s strategic planning and execution.

Arizona State recorded its maximum wins in a season since 1996 under Dillingham’s tutelage, standing at a figure of 11-2. That year was also the last time Arizona State clinched a conference title. Dillingham’s extension promises stability for Arizona State and appears to put them on track to maintain their momentum in the Big 12, following an impressive first year in the conference.

Dillingham’s sound coaching capabilities and proven track records do not solely form the basis of his extension. ESPN reports suggest that commitment towards his coaching personnel will also be an integral part of the extension. Before the extension, he was making a base salary of $4.05 million, but the favorable season revenues generated an additional $2.5 million for him in bonus money. A win against Texas in the Peach Bowl could enrich him by an extra $200,000.

Despite the financial windfall, Dillingham showed humility and generosity by distributing $200,000 of his bonus to the support staff during the regular season. With this benevolence and resonant leadership, Dillingham seems set to lead Arizona State Sun Devils to continued success in the Big 12, ensuring spectators remain at the edge of their seats in the coming seasons.
