As the official start of summer approaches, police are reminding motorists to be cautious during the busy May long weekend. Canada Road Safety Week is also underway, aiming to raise awareness about reducing injuries and saving lives on the country’s roads. The Kelowna RCMP municipal traffic services department is increasing enforcement immediately, with a more visible presence, road checks, and other initiatives planned throughout the city. Mandatory alcohol screening will be conducted at road checks to ensure the safety of all drivers on the road.

The May long weekend typically sees a surge in vehicle traffic and road-related incidents, according to Sgt. Colby Attlesey. Police are urging everyone to plan ahead and be patient with fellow motorists during the busy weekend. Motorists caught driving under the influence could face a 90-day driving prohibition and a mandatory 30-day vehicle impoundment. Those with a history of impaired driving or who are deemed necessary by the investigating officer could face criminal charges for driving while impaired. The public is encouraged to report any instances of impaired driving by calling 911.

Kelowna RCMP is reminding drivers to utilize the various transportation options available throughout the city to ensure a safe journey during the long weekend. Increased enforcement efforts, including a more visible police presence, road checks, and mandatory alcohol screening, will be in place to promote road safety. It is important for all motorists to be patient and considerate of others on the road during this busy time of year.

Impaired driving is a serious offense that can have severe consequences for both the driver and others on the road. Police are taking proactive measures to enforce road safety laws and prevent incidents of impaired driving during the May long weekend. By encouraging the public to report any instances of impaired driving and increasing enforcement efforts, authorities are working to reduce the number of road-related incidents and keep all motorists safe on the roads.

Canada Road Safety Week serves as a reminder for all drivers to prioritize safety and responsible driving habits. The increased enforcement and awareness campaigns aim to reduce injuries and save lives on the nation’s roads. By working together to promote road safety and responsible driving, authorities hope to create a safer environment for all motorists during the busy summer months. It is important for drivers to take precautions, plan ahead, and be mindful of road safety laws to ensure a safe and enjoyable long weekend.
