Former Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Julio Urías was sentenced to 36 months probation and ordered to complete 30 days of community labor after pleading no contest to misdemeanor domestic battery. This came after Urías faced charges including spousal battery, domestic battery in a dating relationship, false imprisonment, and assault, with four other charges being dropped. He must also complete a domestic violence counseling course, pay a fee to a domestic violence fund, not possess weapons, not use force or violence, pay restitution to the victim, and abide by a protective order.
Urias was placed on administrative leave by MLB after his arrest in September outside BMO Stadium in Los Angeles, where he was attending a Major League Soccer game. The arrest came after a citizen reported a physical altercation between a man and woman, leading to Urias being arrested on felony suspicion of domestic violence. Despite the charges, no felony was filed due to the lack of serious injuries or a criminal history on Urias’ part.
In 2019, Urias was suspended for 20 games after being arrested on suspicion of domestic battery, although he was not charged in that instance. MLB is currently investigating the recent case, as no player has been suspended twice for violating the league’s domestic violence policy. Urias spent eight seasons with the Dodgers, finishing in third place in the NL Cy Young Award voting in 2022 and leading the league in ERA. He also won a World Series with the Dodgers in 2020.
Following Urias’ absence, the Dodgers filled the pitching void by signing Yoshinobu Yamamoto to a record-setting contract, trading for Tyler Glasnow, and signing Shohei Ohtani, who will return to the mound in 2025. Urias has a career ERA of 3.11 over 158 games and 122 starts, with a record of 60-25 in the regular season.
