JoJo Siwa reveals she doesn’t write her own songs as she equates the process to purchasing clothes instead of designing them

JoJo Siwa has confirmed that she does not write her own music, following allegations that her latest single, Karma, was “stolen.” She explained that she works with a team of songwriters who pitch songs to her, and she chooses which ones she wants to sing. This revelation came after it was claimed that Karma was originally recorded by performer Brit Smith and should not have been released by Siwa. Smith has since come to Siwa’s defense, stating that she was in the right to record her version of the song.

In a TikTok video, Siwa addressed the situation, stating that she does not take part in the writing process but enjoys working with different songwriters to bring their lyrics to life. She compared the process to buying clothes – the songwriters create the songs, and she puts her own spin on them. Siwa emphasized that the songwriters always receive credit and payment for their work. This information came after Siwa originally denied the allegations of “stealing” the song, explaining that she was pitched the song and felt it aligned with her vision.

The song, Karma, had originally been recorded by Brit Smith in 2012 but was never officially released. It resurfaced on social media after Siwa released her version, and it gained popularity, surpassing Siwa’s version on the US iTunes pop charts. Despite the controversy, Smith spoke out in support of Siwa, stating that she was not part of any bullying and had done nothing wrong. Smith emphasized that she was in the right to record her own version of the song and did not feel that Siwa had stolen it from her.

Siwa’s admission that she does not write her own music brings to light the common practice in the music industry of artists working with songwriters to create their songs. While some artists are known for writing their own material entirely, others collaborate with songwriters to bring new music to life. Siwa’s situation serves as a reminder that it is important for songwriters to receive credit and compensation for their work, even if the artist is the one performing the song. Ultimately, the controversy surrounding Karma highlights the complexities of the music industry and the importance of transparency and collaboration in creating music.
