Johnson aims to unite GOP by cracking down on protests at college campuses

Speaker Mike Johnson is focusing on the recent pro-Palestinian protests on college campuses in an attempt to unify the fractured House Republican conference and expose divisions within the House Democratic caucus. With plans to investigate clashes at universities, including oversight of federal funding, hearings with college presidents, and legislation to address antisemitism, Johnson is coordinating the effort across multiple committees to make it a focal point of the GOP agenda.

The initiative could help Johnson gain support within his conference and attract key voter constituencies ahead of the November elections. The House GOP campaign arm has already released a digital ad tying Democrats to antisemitism on college campuses. However, Republicans have faced challenges with some of their own members making anti-Muslim and antisemitic comments, which has created divisions within the party on addressing antisemitism.

There are concerns among some Democrats that the investigative effort into college campuses is a political ploy to divide rather than unite on condemning antisemitism. The focus on antisemitism on college campuses marks a shift away from the GOP’s impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden, which has stalled due to lack of evidence. Johnson’s approach to both probes is to let the facts guide the committees’ investigations.

Johnson’s investigation into antisemitism on college campuses has garnered attention, with him urging President Biden to visit and see the situation firsthand. Multiple committees are involved in the effort, with plans to hold hearings, demand documents, and scrutinize various aspects of universities’ handling of antisemitism. Chairman Jim Jordan praised Johnson for showing leadership by taking on this issue.

The House GOP probe reaches across various committees, investigating student visas, protest group funding, science grants compliance, and university tax status. Johnson sees his role as providing clarity, conviction, and consistency on the issue of antisemitism. Committee chairs, including Virginia Foxx and Jim Jordan, have announced hearings and investigations related to the protests on college campuses and the response from the Washington DC government.

While the GOP’s efforts to address antisemitism on college campuses have received bipartisan support through legislation, there are concerns about the motivations behind the investigation. Some Democrats view it as a divisive tactic, while Republicans see it as a way to address a critical issue affecting Jewish students. With the upcoming elections, the GOP is positioning itself to appeal to key constituencies and address concerns about antisemitism in higher education.
