Philadelphia 76ers center Joel Embiid was involved in a heated altercation in the locker room with Philadelphia Inquirer columnist Marcus Hayes after the team lost to the Memphis Grizzlies. Embiid was visibly upset with Hayes for mentioning his late brother and son in columns that questioned the player’s professionalism and fitness. The NBA has since opened an investigation.
The confrontation occurred as reporters moved into the locker room after the game to interview the players. Embiid confronted Hayes about his comments, warning him not to bring up his family again. The exchange became more heated and at one point, Embiid shoved Hayes on the shoulder.
During the confrontation, the team’s public relations chief attempted to intervene, but Embiid appeared to escalate the situation by raising his voice and pushing Hayes again. Another PR representative attempted to clear the locker room, moving Tyrese Maxey’s interview to the hallway outside.
Embiid had previously called out Hayes during a press conference, accusing him of lack of support and unfairly criticizing his extended absence from the team. Hayes had written an article suggesting that Embiid was disrespecting the 76ers and their fans, and proposed that fans should be refunded when Embiid does not play.
In his defense, Embiid argued that he had made significant contributions to the team and the city, and that his efforts and intentions to return to the court were being misrepresented. Hayes was not present at the Friday practice when Embiid made his comments, and it is still unclear when Embiid will be able to play again.
The NBA is investigating the incident to determine whether disciplinary action is needed. The outcome of the investigation and potential future actions will likely have implications not only for Embiid, but for the relationship between players, the team, and the media as well.
