Joe Wolf, a former North Carolina basketball captain who went on to have a successful career in the NBA and coaching, has passed away at the age of 59. The Milwaukee Bucks, one of the teams he played for and later coached with, announced his death this week. Described as a highly respected and dedicated coach and player, Wolf was beloved by many both on and off the court. The Bucks expressed their condolences to his family and friends, acknowledging his hard work and commitment to the organization.

After a successful high school career, Wolf joined the Tar Heels at North Carolina where he played alongside future NBA stars Michael Jordan and Sam Perkins. He was a co-captain for the team in his senior year and credited legendary coach Dean Smith for instilling important skills in him from the beginning of his college experience. North Carolina had a successful run during Wolf’s time there, achieving a 115-22 record over four seasons and reaching the Sweet 16 twice and the Elite Eight twice. Wolf was an All-ACC pick in 1987 and finished his college career with 1,231 points.

Following his time at North Carolina, Wolf was drafted by the Los Angeles Clippers in 1987 and went on to play for several NBA teams over the span of 11 years. He later transitioned into coaching, working as an assistant at the college level and then moving on to become a head coach in what is now known as the G League. Wolf also had stints as an NBA assistant coach with teams like the Milwaukee Bucks and Brooklyn Nets. In 2023, he was hired as an assistant for the Wisconsin Herd, the Bucks’ G League affiliate.

Outside of his professional career, Wolf was known for his contributions to the community and his leadership both on and off the court. He led Kohler High School to three Wisconsin state championships and was named the state’s greatest high school basketball player ever by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel in 2005. Wolf was remembered not only for his basketball skills but also for his character and the impact he had on those around him. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

The passing of Joe Wolf is a loss not only for the basketball community but for all who knew him personally. His legacy as a player, coach, and community leader will live on, and he will be remembered for his dedication, hard work, and the positive influence he had on others. The Milwaukee Bucks and the entire basketball world mourn his loss and send their condolences to his family and friends. Wolf’s impact on the sport and the lives he touched will be remembered for years to come.
