Far-left Green Party presidential candidate Jill Stein was arrested during an anti-Israel protest at Washington University in St. Louis on Saturday. She was among more than 80 people arrested after refusing to leave the university campus. Footage posted online showed Stein being detained and escorted away from the protest. Her campaign manager and deputy campaign manager were also arrested during the incident. Stein stated that they were standing up for constitutional rights and the American people who wanted to end the genocide in Gaza.

Stein and other protesters were accused of attempting to de-escalate with police before being arrested. Her team claimed that university administrations were condoning the use of force against students who were calling for peace, human rights, and an end to the genocide in Gaza. The protest was demanding an end to the war in Gaza and cutting ties with Boeing Co. The university stated that the demonstration had the potential to become dangerous, leading to the arrests of all the participants. Charges of trespassing, resisting arrest, and assault, including injuries to police officers, were mentioned in the statement.

Prior to her arrest in St. Louis, Stein was confronted by Jewish protesters outside Columbia University who criticized her for being in opposition to Israel’s war against Hamas. The protesters accused her of representing the minority of Jews and being part of the 1% that did not support the war. Stein, a physician and Harvard graduate, had previously sought the Green Party presidential nomination in 2012 and 2016. She announced her 2024 presidential bid last November, with one of her top priorities being to end the genocide in Gaza.

The incident at Washington University was part of ongoing anti-Israel protests, with demonstrators calling for an end to the war in Gaza. The university defended its actions in arresting the protesters, stating that while they support free expression, they expected everyone to respect their policies. The university emphasized that they would take swift action to enforce these policies. The arrests at the protest and the confrontations with Jewish protesters highlighted the controversy surrounding the issue of Israel’s war against Hamas and the differing opinions within the Jewish community.

Stein’s arrest and the protests reflect the growing tensions and debates surrounding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The calls to end the war in Gaza and the demand for universities to cut ties with companies involved in the conflict underscore the passion and activism of those advocating for peace and human rights. Stein’s involvement in these protests and her presidential bid highlight her commitment to addressing these issues on a political platform. The incidents at Columbia University and Washington University serve as a reminder of the complexities and challenges involved in addressing conflicts like the one in Gaza and the importance of free expression and peaceful activism in seeking resolutions.
