Jill Biden stresses the importance of allowing military spouses to work from overseas for federal employees

The article discusses a new agreement signed by the Deputy Defense Secretary and Deputy Secretary of State, which allows federal employees who are military spouses to work from overseas. This agreement is seen as a national security imperative by First Lady Jill Biden, who has been advocating for such a policy. The agreement is part of President Joe Biden’s executive order that aims to support military families and ease the challenges they face when their spouses are deployed overseas. Jill Biden emphasized the importance of supporting military spouses, who also serve the country in their own way, even though they do not wear a uniform.

The first lady highlighted the fact that military spouses face a 21% unemployment rate, which has remained unchanged over the past decade. More than 16,000 military, veteran, and surviving spouses currently work across federal departments and agencies. Jill Biden shared stories from military spouses with her husband, prompting him to take action and address their challenges. She stressed that the government has a responsibility to support military families and enable them to choose both their love for their country and the families who serve alongside them.

During a White House ceremony, Jill Biden, Deputy Defense Secretary Hicks, and Deputy Secretary of State Verma signed the agreement, which aims to make it easier for military spouses to work remotely under the Domestic Employees Teleworking Overseas program. The first lady mentioned that the principle of an all-volunteer military is at risk when service members are forced to choose between their country and their families. By providing support and opportunities for military spouses to work overseas, the government can help strengthen national security and ensure that military families are taken care of.

Jill Biden acknowledged the audience, which was predominantly female, and emphasized the importance of allowing military spouses to take their jobs with them when deployed overseas. She described the agreement as a common-sense solution that is long overdue. The first lady, who teaches English and writing at a community college, humorously mentioned that she is also a working spouse of a government employee. Her involvement in advocating for military families and the signing of this agreement demonstrates the Biden administration’s commitment to supporting military spouses and addressing the challenges they face.

The agreement signed between the Department of Defense and the Department of State is a significant step towards easing the approvals of remote work for military spouses. This initiative is part of the Joining Forces program, which is aimed at supporting military and veteran families. By allowing military spouses to work from overseas, the government is not only fulfilling a moral obligation but also addressing a national security imperative. The first lady’s involvement in this initiative reflects her dedication to advocating for military families and ensuring that they receive the support they need to thrive.
