Jens Spahn calls for a review of the Corona policy

Former German Health Minister Spahn advocates for a review of the country’s coronavirus policies and responses during the pandemic. He believes that a comprehensive examination should be conducted to learn from past experiences and better prepare for future crises. Spahn highlighted the importance of considering various perspectives in the review process to ensure a well-rounded analysis. He suggested that an Enquete Commission in the Bundestag could be a suitable framework for this purpose, with participation from politicians and experts.

Spahn emphasized the need to discuss accountability in relation to the decisions made during the pandemic. He acknowledged the responsibility he and others held during the crisis and expressed willingness to address this responsibility. Spahn defended the government’s approach, stating that they tried to strike a balance between extreme views such as achieving ‘Zero-Covid’ and letting the virus spread unchecked. He argued that Germany’s ability to engage in critical debates and make adjustments distinguishes it from autocratic countries like China.

Furthermore, Spahn pointed out that efforts to learn from past mistakes have already been made, citing improvements in pandemic preparedness and vaccine production as examples. He also touched on the importance of reducing dependence on countries like China for supplies. Spahn stressed that while a review of pandemic responses is essential, progress has been made in certain areas and lessons have been learned. He highlighted the ongoing debate about sovereignty and the need to avoid overreliance on external sources.

Looking back, Spahn reflected on his role during the first two years of the pandemic, noting areas where improvements could have been made, particularly in protecting children and youth from the impact of the crisis. He noted that his successor, Karl Lauterbach, shared similar views and commended the overall success of Germany’s pandemic response. Lauterbach also expressed openness to a thorough review of the country’s actions during the crisis.

Overall, Spahn’s calls for a comprehensive review of Germany’s coronavirus policies reflect a commitment to learning from past experiences and improving crisis preparedness in the future. The proposed Enquete Commission could provide a platform for a detailed examination of the decisions and strategies implemented during the pandemic. As discussions continue about the best approach for conducting this review, it remains to be seen how the process will unfold and what insights will be gained from this critical evaluation of the country’s response to the crisis.
