The President of Romania, Klaus Iohannis, in a joint press conference with Sergio Mattarella, emphasized the common concerns for security generated by Russia’s war against Ukraine and the negative impact on the region and the Euro-Atlantic space. He stated that they will continue working to strengthen NATO’s role in preventing war and defending states, as well as deterrence and defense on both the eastern and southern fronts. Iohannis also highlighted the shared history and values between Italy and Romania.

President Iohannis continued by stating that President Mattarella is a great friend to Romania and that their meeting was a natural continuation of their strong bond. He emphasized the common history and values, as well as the strong economic dynamics between Italy and Romania. Iohannis also mentioned the special connection between the Romanian community in Italy and the Italian community in Romania, stating that they have a solid foundation for confident future bilateral relations. He pointed out that the trade between the two countries reached 20 billion euros last year.

The two presidents discussed the importance of enhancing cooperation in areas such as security, defense, culture, and economy. They also addressed the challenges posed by Russia’s aggression and their commitment to strengthening NATO’s role in promoting peace and security. President Mattarella expressed his appreciation for Romania’s contribution to NATO and reiterated Italy’s support for Romania’s efforts in enhancing regional security. Both leaders agreed on the need to work together to address common challenges.

President Mattarella praised Romania’s progress in strengthening democracy, the rule of law, and a market economy. He highlighted the importance of continuing reforms and emphasized the need for a united European approach to security and defense. He also emphasized the shared values and interests that bind Italy and Romania together and expressed his commitment to further enhancing bilateral cooperation on various issues.

The two presidents reaffirmed their commitment to deepening cooperation in various fields, including trade, investment, energy, and infrastructure. They discussed ways to strengthen ties between the two countries, promote economic growth, and foster greater cultural and educational exchanges. They also emphasized the importance of working together to address global challenges and support peace and stability in the region. The meeting between the presidents highlighted the strong relationship between Italy and Romania and their shared commitment to promoting peace, security, and prosperity in the Euro-Atlantic region.
