Israeli Offensive on Rafah Will Not Eliminate Hamas, Remarks Biden’s Advisor

Mr. Kirby, a spokesperson for the United States, addressed concerns that the country was breaking ties with Israel, emphasizing that this was not the case. He pointed to President Biden’s recent visit to Israel, the provision of military assistance, and the involvement of American fighter pilots in shooting down Iranian drones as evidence of continued support for the country. Kirby also mentioned that the U.S. believes Israel has exerted significant pressure on Hamas and that there are better ways to address the remaining Hamas presence in Rafah than through a large-scale ground operation. The U.S. is working with Israel on various strategies to assist in defeating Hamas, including securing the border between Gaza and Egypt to prevent weapon smuggling and targeting Hamas leaders.

Despite the temporary pause in certain weapons shipments to Israel, Kirby clarified that the country is still receiving the majority of the resources needed for defense, with a recent funding package passed by Congress maintaining support for Israel. The decision to halt some weapons deliveries highlighted growing tensions between President Biden and Prime Minister Netanyahu, with the latter expressing determination to proceed with an invasion in Rafah regardless of global backing. Israeli forces have conducted targeted strikes in Rafah and preparations for a ground invasion, such as evacuating over 100,000 individuals, have been observed. Netanyahu’s statement reflected a readiness to persevere even if Israel had to stand alone, emphasizing a strong spirit and faith in victory with divine assistance.

The situation in Rafah has escalated due to ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, with both sides engaging in military actions. The Israeli government has taken steps to exert pressure on Hamas, targeting its leaders and seeking to prevent weapon smuggling in the region. Meanwhile, Hamas has continued its attacks on Israel, prompting a response from the Israeli military. The recent developments, including the potential for a ground invasion in Rafah, have raised concerns about the escalation of violence and the impact on civilian populations in the area. Efforts are being made to address the root causes of the conflict and find a path towards de-escalation and resolution, but the situation remains volatile and uncertain.

The United States remains committed to supporting Israel’s defense and security needs while also advocating for a peaceful resolution to the conflict in Gaza. President Biden’s decision to temporarily pause certain weapons shipments to Israel is aimed at promoting dialogue and diplomacy to address the underlying issues fueling the conflict. The U.S. government continues to engage with Israeli officials to explore ways to de-escalate tensions and prevent further violence, while also recognizing Israel’s right to defend itself against security threats. Efforts are underway to coordinate international aid and support to address the humanitarian impact of the conflict on civilian populations in Gaza and ensure that essential supplies reach those in need.

The statements and actions of both U.S. and Israeli officials reflect a complex and challenging dynamic in the region, with multiple stakeholders and interests at play. While the U.S. reaffirms its commitment to Israel’s security and defense, it also acknowledges the need for a diplomatic solution to the conflict in Gaza. The ongoing violence and tensions underscore the urgency of finding a lasting resolution that addresses the root causes of the conflict and promotes peace and stability in the region. As the situation continues to evolve, global leaders and stakeholders are called upon to work towards de-escalation, dialogue, and reconciliation to prevent further loss of life and suffering in Gaza and Israel.
