Israeli Minister Allegedly Requests IDF to Use Lethal Force on Palestinians Instead of Making Arrests

Israel’s far-right national security minister, Itamar Ben-Gvir, has reportedly suggested that the military should consider killing some of the Palestinians taken captive instead of arresting them. This dehumanizing comment is the latest in a series of similar remarks by extremist cabinet members under Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who have targeted the residents of Gaza. Israeli Defense Force’s chief of staff, Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi, revealed during a security cabinet meeting that hundreds of Palestinians had been arrested after surrendering to the military in response to Hamas’ attacks in Gaza.

During the meeting, Ben-Gvir expressed concern over the number of arrests, questioning why so many Palestinians were being apprehended and suggesting that some of them be killed instead. However, Lt. Gen. Halevi clarified that the IDF only shoots those who fight back, not those who surrender. This prompted a response from Agriculture Minister Avi Dichter, who criticized Ben-Gvir for his controversial stance, insinuating that such views were unbecoming of a minister in Israel.

Ben-Gvir’s call for executing Palestinian captives is not a new development, as he previously proposed implementing the death penalty for prisoners as a solution to prison overcrowding. He also advocated shooting Palestinian women and children in Gaza to “protect” the troops, sparking condemnation from both human rights groups and international observers. The use of such language and the violent actions in Gaza have led to accusations of war crimes and genocide against Palestinians.

The Biden administration has openly opposed Netanyahu’s far-right cabinet members, including Ben-Gvir, for their discriminatory and violent policies towards Palestinians. Despite facing criticism within the Israeli government for his comments, Ben-Gvir remains in office with the support of Netanyahu. Ben-Gvir is a former member of the banned anti-Arab Kahane movement and has a history of incitement and terrorism charges against him.

Israel’s actions against Palestinians have drawn condemnation from countries around the world, with increasing pressure on Israel to change its policies and treatment of Palestinians. The indiscriminate killing, settler violence, and the use of dehumanizing language towards Palestinians have further highlighted the need for a resolution to the ongoing conflict. However, with Netanyahu’s support, individuals like Ben-Gvir continue to hold positions of power in the Israeli government, perpetuating a cycle of violence and discrimination.
