Additionally, a 23-year-old suspect from Jerusalem was recruiting others for various tasks, including graffiti spraying, vehicle arson, and intelligence gathering.
During the investigation, Israeli officials discovered that the suspects were in contact with a foreign agent and were being directed by Iranian intelligence. The suspects were arrested near the scientist’s home after photographing it in exchange for money. Various incriminating items, such as a fake police license plate, credit cards, and cash, were found during searches of the suspects’ homes. It is expected that charges for serious security offenses will be filed against them. A senior Shin Bet official emphasized that scientists, mayors, security officials, and other prominent Israelis are targets for Iranian agents, highlighting Iran’s ongoing efforts to recruit Israeli citizens for terrorist activities.
In addition to the plot to assassinate the Israeli scientist and mayor, Israeli security agencies also uncovered and stopped an Iranian spy ring operating out of northern Israel. The seven suspects, residents of Haifa and other areas in northern Israel, were gathering intelligence on Israeli military bases, including air force and naval installations, as well as Israel’s Iron Dome defense system. They were also suspected of relaying information to Iranian intelligence on Israel’s critical energy infrastructure, including the largest power station in Hadera. The spy network was reportedly using sophisticated equipment to photograph sensitive locations in exchange for hundreds of thousands of dollars, with some payments made using cryptocurrency.
The arrests of these suspects come amidst heightened tensions between Israel and Iran, with Israeli officials expressing concern over Iran’s increasing efforts to recruit Israeli citizens for terrorist activities.
