Is Google’s New ‘Audio Emoji’ Feature on Android More Hilarious or Irritating?

Google I/O is set to begin on May 14, featuring discussions on Android 15, AI-powered features, and more for Google devices. In the meantime, users can try out new Android features, including “audio emoji” available in the beta version of the Phone by Google app. This feature allows users to play sound effects corresponding to existing emojis during phone calls, such as a fart noise. While there are six sound effects to choose from, including applause and laughter, the feature may not be appealing to everyone.

The audio emoji available on Android include clapping hands, face with tears of joy, party popper, crying face, pile of poo (fart), and drum. Each sound effect corresponds to a specific emoji and can be used during phone calls to add a playful element. While most of the sound effects are straightforward, some may require context to understand their meaning, such as the sad trombone noise for the crying face emoji or the rimshot sound effect for the drum emoji.

To use the audio emoji during a phone call, users may need to download the beta version of the Phone by Google app and update it through the Play Store. Once the feature is enabled, users can access the audio emoji button above the phone dialer buttons during a call and choose from the available sound effects. While the feature can add a fun element to phone conversations, users should be mindful of when and how they use it to avoid annoying others.

Disabling the audio emoji feature can be done through the Phone app settings, but it only applies to the user’s device. If someone else has the feature enabled on their Android device, the user may still hear the sound effects during calls, even if they have an iPhone. While the feature is simple to use, users should exercise caution and consider the context of the conversation before using audio emoji, especially in professional or serious situations. Overusing the feature could lead to it becoming more annoying than humorous over time.

Overall, the introduction of audio emoji to Android devices provides a playful and quirky element to phone calls, allowing users to express emotions and reactions through sound effects. While some users may find the feature entertaining and engaging, others may prefer more traditional methods of communication. As Google continues to innovate and introduce new features to its devices, it will be interesting to see how users respond to and incorporate audio emoji into their daily interactions.
