A Sahil Güvenlik Gemisi was tasked with rescuing a large number of irregular migrants adrift off the coast of Marmaris in Muğla. Greek coast guard elements were reported to have pushed back three life rafts into Turkish territorial waters. Among the 88 irregular migrants rescued, 38 were children.
The incident highlights the ongoing issue of irregular migration in the region, with many individuals risking their lives to cross borders in search of better opportunities. The danger of crossing the Aegean Sea in overcrowded and unseaworthy vessels is a major concern for authorities on both sides of the border.
The rescued migrants will be provided with medical assistance and taken to a detention center for processing. The Turkish authorities are also working to identify and locate the human traffickers responsible for organizing the dangerous journey.
The Turkish coast guard continues to patrol the waters in an effort to prevent further incidents and safeguard the lives of those attempting to make the treacherous crossing. The cooperation between Turkish and Greek authorities is crucial in addressing the challenges posed by irregular migration in the region.
Efforts are also being made to address the root causes of irregular migration, including poverty, conflict, and lack of opportunities in the migrants’ countries of origin. International cooperation and assistance are needed to support sustainable development and create pathways for legal and safe migration for those in need.
