Irish energy firm Simply Blue Group has announced plans to produce aviation fuel using 700,000 tonnes of wood biomass annually. The biofuel project is set to begin construction in 2026 in Goldboro, Nova Scotia, with operations expected to start by 2029. The company has secured 305 hectares of land for the development, including land previously owned by Pieridae and land owned by the Municipality of the District of Guysborough. Simply Blue Group states that their aviation fuel performs similarly to conventional jet fuel, but with a 90% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.

Every year, the project will source 700,000 tonnes of biomass from Wagner Forest NS Ltd. to produce 150,000 tonnes of aviation fuel. Tory Rushton, the province’s natural resources minister, expressed enthusiasm for the project, noting that it could open up a new market for the province’s forestry sector. This initiative aligns with efforts to reduce carbon emissions and transition towards more sustainable energy sources. By utilizing wood biomass for aviation fuel production, Simply Blue Group aims to contribute to environmental conservation while meeting the demands of the aviation industry.

The decision to choose Goldboro, Nova Scotia as the location for the biofuel project highlights the province’s commitment to supporting renewable energy initiatives. The site’s proximity to Halifax provides logistical advantages for transportation and distribution of the aviation fuel. By repurposing land previously designated for other industrial projects, such as the LNG plant planned by Pieridae, Simply Blue Group is demonstrating a shift towards more environmentally friendly and sustainable practices. The project’s potential to create new economic opportunities for the region is also a significant benefit.

Incorporating sustainable practices in the production of aviation fuel is crucial for reducing the carbon footprint of the aviation industry. Simply Blue Group’s approach to using wood biomass as a feedstock for fuel production aligns with the goals of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and promoting environmental stewardship. The company’s investment in renewable energy technologies and partnerships with local suppliers signal a commitment to promoting a more sustainable future for aviation. By working with Wagner Forest NS Ltd. and the Municipality of the District of Guysborough, Simply Blue Group is fostering collaboration and innovation in the biofuel industry.

The biofuel project in Goldboro represents a step towards a more sustainable and environmentally conscious approach to aviation fuel production. By harnessing the potential of wood biomass as a renewable energy source, Simply Blue Group is paving the way for greener alternatives in the aviation sector. The project’s anticipated completion by 2029 signifies a significant milestone in the transition towards cleaner energy solutions. With support from government officials and local stakeholders, the biofuel project is poised to make a positive impact on both the economy and the environment in Nova Scotia.
