Iran’s Presidential Candidates Unite on One Issue: The Arrival of Trump

Throughout Iran’s presidential campaign, Donald J. Trump has been a central figure in debates, rallies, and speeches. The six candidates running for office often talk about preparing for negotiations and managing Trump, emphasizing the importance of dealing with him. There is minimal mention of President Biden, and focus remains on Trump’s potential victory in the 2024 White House race. Trump’s impact on Iran’s foreign policy, specifically regarding the nuclear deal and economic sanctions, has had lasting effects on the country’s economy.

Candidates like Mostafa Pourmohammadi and Alireza Zakani present themselves as capable of standing up to Trump, while also accusing their rivals of having “Trump-phobia.” The fear of another Trump presidency looms large over the election, with all candidates recognizing the significance of Iran’s relations with the world in determining the country’s economic future. Hard-liners argue their toughness will subdue Trump, while moderate and reformist candidates believe they can change the conversation with the U.S. for the better.

The potential return of the Trump administration has spurred concern in Iran, leading to preparations for dealing with him in the event of his victory. Despite indirect negotiations with the United States through intermediaries, Iran is hesitant to engage directly with Trump if he is reelected. The Iranian Parliament speaker, Mohammad Baqer Ghalibaf, emphasizes the need for calculative behavior in the face of an unpredictable enemy like Trump, highlighting the delicate balance needed in decision-making.

Trump’s policy of maximum pressure on Iran aimed to force concessions on the country’s nuclear program, without seeking regime change. In Iran’s theocratic system, the supreme leader holds final authority over major state matters, but the president influences domestic and foreign policy. Campaign staff members for various candidates, like Dr. Masoud Pezeshkian, have noted concerns among voters regarding Trump’s potential impact on Iran’s future, prompting questions about candidates’ plans for dealing with him.

Candidates vary in their approaches to addressing Trump, with some emphasizing the importance of a skilled diplomatic response, while others advocate for a tougher stance. The nuclear deal negotiation will be a key issue for the next president, as it directly impacts Iran’s economic outlook. With the election approaching, the specter of a Trump comeback adds a sense of urgency and uncertainty to the political landscape, with candidates vying to prove they are best equipped to navigate Iran’s relations with the U.S. and the world.
