Raven Johnson of the South Carolina Gamecocks couldn’t stop watching the team’s loss to Iowa in the Final Four last spring, where she felt hurt and wondered if she wanted to continue playing basketball. It wasn’t until a teammate intervened that Johnson found the strength to move on and reframe those dark days as part of her learning and growth process. She now sees the loss as an opportunity to improve and prepare for redemption in the NCAA championship game against Iowa.

Johnson acknowledges that she wasn’t perceived as a threat on the court, particularly from the 3-point range, during the loss to Iowa. However, she has since improved her shooting and performance, making significant contributions during the NCAA Tournament. Johnson’s growth and dedication to getting better have earned the admiration of Iowa’s star player, Caitlin Clark, who acknowledges Johnson’s hard work and improvement leading up to the championship game rematch.

Despite briefly considering quitting after the loss to Iowa, Johnson persevered and used the experience as motivation to become a better player. South Carolina coach Dawn Staley understands the growth process of her players and was not surprised by Johnson’s ability to turn a difficult experience into an opportunity for growth and self-improvement. Johnson’s continuous learning and willingness to evolve have been key factors in her progress on and off the court.

Looking ahead to the championship game against Iowa, Johnson is eager for another shot at redemption and is prepared for the challenge. She acknowledges that the lessons learned from the loss to Iowa have made her mentally stronger and more confident in her abilities. Johnson’s growth as a player and a person has been evident throughout the season, with improvements in various aspects of her game and a newfound sense of resilience and determination.

Johnson’s journey from the painful loss to Iowa to the upcoming NCAA championship game has been one of growth, resilience, and self-discovery. She has embraced the challenges and setbacks along the way, using them as opportunities for improvement and personal development. Johnson’s dedication to her craft, willingness to learn, and desire to succeed have been instrumental in her transformation into a stronger, more confident player. As she prepares for the championship game rematch against Iowa, Johnson is ready to showcase her growth and determination on the court.
