Inside the 2024 Cannes Film Festival: A Behind-the-Scenes Look

The 2024 Cannes Film Festival is in full swing, with a backdrop of war and protests adding a combustible element to the usual glamour. The #MeToo movement has gained momentum in the French film industry, leading to threats of strikes by festival workers. Despite this, celebrities and filmmakers from around the world are attending the prestigious event on the French Riviera. The Associated Press is providing an insider’s view of the festival with a running diary of events.

The festival kicked off with a screening of George Miller’s “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,” followed by Francis Ford Coppola’s unveiling of his self-financed opus “Megalopolis.” Coppola, surrounded by family members including granddaughter Romy and sister Talia Shire, delivered a moving message of unity amidst personal loss. Another notable premiere was Andrea Arnold’s “Bird,” a coming-of-age drama with touches of magical realism featuring a strong ensemble cast.

Master documentarian Frederick Wiseman presented a restored version of his 1969 film “Law and Order” at Cannes. The 94-year-old filmmaker is celebrated for his observational style and has over 45 films digitized for upcoming retrospectives in major cities. Meanwhile, George Miller hinted at the possibility of exploring Furiosa’s backstory in a separate film, depending on the reception of “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.” The film received a warm reception at Cannes and has a release date in China.

Anya Taylor-Joy stole the spotlight at the premiere of “Furiosa,” showcasing her star power and style on the red carpet. Other standout films at the festival included Magnus von Horn’s “The Girl with the Needle” and Jonathan Millet’s “Ghost Trail,” both exploring dark themes with striking storytelling. The Cannes red carpet, known for its glamour, undergoes regular changes due to weather conditions, highlighting the festival’s attention to detail and aesthetics.

The opening day of Cannes featured Meryl Streep receiving an honorary Palme d’Or and Greta Gerwig heading the jury. The atmosphere was surreal, with Gerwig serenaded with David Bowie’s “Modern Love” in a nod to her film “Frances Ha.” Last year’s Palme winner, Messi the dog, made a return to the red carpet, adding a touch of whimsy to the proceedings. The festival is a mix of glamour, high-profile premieres, and thought-provoking films that showcase the diversity and creativity of the global film industry.

Stay tuned for more updates from Cannes as the festival unfolds, with the Associated Press providing comprehensive coverage of the events, premieres, and behind-the-scenes moments at one of the world’s most prestigious film festivals. Follow along for insider insights and breaking news from the French Riviera as the 2024 Cannes Film Festival continues to captivate audiences around the world.
