The Manitoba RCMP’s internet child exploitation unit consists of seven officers dedicated to investigating crimes against children that occur online. These officers are trained to deal with the disturbing material they encounter on a daily basis. They undergo “gentle exposure” to graphic content to ensure they are able to handle the demands of the job. While the work can be emotionally draining, the officers feel a sense of reward in protecting vulnerable children and apprehending those trying to harm them.

Const. Grant Kummen emphasizes the importance of the work in keeping children safe, despite the toll it may take on officers. He acknowledges that there are moments when the material is difficult to bear and that officers need to take breaks to decompress. The unit encourages self-care strategies, such as taking walks, playing games like Tetris or Where’s Waldo, and exercising to help officers cope with the challenges of the job. Despite the emotional challenges, the officers find fulfillment in the results of their investigations and the impact they have in removing predators from the streets and ensuring the safety of children.

Const. Izza Mian and Const. Kirandeep Hira echo the sentiment of finding reward in their work, even if they are able to help just one child. They emphasize the importance of serving justice and removing dangerous individuals from society. The officers express a shared understanding within the unit of the nature of their work and the need to support each other through difficult moments. While they may experience moments of emotional distress, they are motivated by the positive outcomes of their efforts and the difference they can make in the lives of vulnerable children.

The officers’ training includes preparation for the emotional challenges of their work, with a focus on self-care and mental health. They are encouraged to take breaks and engage in activities that help them manage the stress and trauma of dealing with disturbing material. The unit recognizes the importance of prioritizing the well-being of its officers to ensure they remain effective in their roles. Despite the demanding nature of their job, the officers remain dedicated to their mission of protecting children and seeking justice for victims of online exploitation and abuse.

The officers in the Manitoba RCMP ICE unit have a deep sense of purpose in their work, driven by a desire to make a positive impact and protect vulnerable children. They are committed to removing predators from the streets and holding them accountable for their actions. While they acknowledge the emotional toll of their work, they find satisfaction in the results of their investigations and the knowledge that they are making a difference in the lives of those at risk. The unit fosters a supportive environment where officers can rely on each other for understanding and encouragement as they navigate the difficult realities of investigating crimes against children online.
