Indonesia has been attempting to attract Tesla, Musk’s company, to establish manufacturing plants for electric vehicles utilizing the country’s abundant nickel resources. Musk is scheduled to meet with President Joko Widodo to discuss various topics, including the country’s EV sector development and the significance of internet connectivity, particularly in remote areas. The event also coincides with the World Water Forum held on the island.
According to Communications Minister Budi Arie Setiadi, Starlink is now available commercially in Indonesia, with a specific emphasis on providing services to outer and underdeveloped regions. Prior to the launch, Starlink obtained permits to operate as an internet service provider and provide networks utilizing very small aperture terminals (VSAT). With approximately 60% of the 7,500 satellites orbiting the earth, SpaceX’s Starlink holds a dominant position in the satellite internet industry.
Indonesia is the third country in Southeast Asia where Starlink has begun operations, following Malaysia and the Philippines. In Malaysia, Starlink has been licensed to offer internet services, while SpaceX signed a deal with a Philippine-based company in 2022. Additionally, Starlink’s services are widely utilized in Ukraine, where it is employed by various sectors such as the military, hospitals, businesses, and aid organizations.
