Indian Prime Minister Modi submits nomination for third term in upcoming general election

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi filed his nomination papers to run in the ongoing election in Varanasi, a city considered holy by Hindus. The election is a referendum on his decade in power, with the 73-year-old leader hoping to retain his seat in Varanasi, which he won in 2014 and 2019. The general election in India began in April and will continue until June 1, with votes being counted on June 4. Modi’s Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party is currently leading in the polls over the opposition alliance led by the Indian National Congress and regional parties.

The filing of nomination papers is a procedural step that allows Modi to contest the election in Varanasi. Modi is seen as a champion of India’s Hindu majority and has overseen significant economic growth during his 10 years in power. Supporters credit him with improving India’s global standing, but critics argue that he has undermined the country’s democracy and secular foundation by allowing attacks against minorities and limiting dissent. Modi’s opponents have also raised concerns about economic issues such as high unemployment and inflation despite strong growth.

Before filing his nomination, Modi led a roadshow in Varanasi, drawing thousands of supporters who cheered his name as he made his way through the city streets. The constituency of Varanasi has around 1.7 million voters, and Modi is expected to hold onto his seat against competitors like Ajai Rai from the Samajwadi Party and Athar Jamal Lari from the Bahujan Samaj Party. Varanasi is located in Uttar Pradesh, India’s most populous state, which holds significant sway in Indian elections due to its large number of seats in Parliament. Modi’s BJP has won in the state in the past two elections.

The holy city of Varanasi, situated on the banks of the Ganges River, holds special importance in Indian culture and religion. As Modi filed his nomination papers, his supporters expressed their enthusiasm by wearing party flags and chanting his name. The atmosphere was festive, with rose petals raining down on the prime minister as he smiled at the crowds. The overall sentiment among his followers is one of strong support and admiration for Modi’s leadership. The upcoming election will determine whether Modi and his party will continue to govern India for another term, facing tough competition from the opposition alliance led by the Congress party.
