The preliminary data collected for the report showed that in 2023, 10,884 law enforcement agencies employing 600,120 officers reported 79,091 assaults on officers. This indicates a rate of 13.2 assaults per 100 officers, highlighting the dangers faced by law enforcement personnel in the course of their duties. The release of the report coincided with National Police Week, during which events were held to honor fallen law enforcement officers across the country. Attorney General Merrick Garland and other law enforcement leaders attended a candlelight vigil in Washington, D.C., to pay tribute to those who lost their lives in the line of duty.
The sacrifices made by law enforcement officers were highlighted at a memorial for Deputy U.S. Marshal Thomas Weeks, one of the fallen officers.
