Thousands of Cubans, including President Miguel Diaz-Canel and other leaders, marched in Havana in solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza, carrying a banner reading “Long live free Palestine” and wearing keffiyeh scarves. The event aimed to support the Palestinian people’s claim for sovereignty and freedom, denouncing Israel’s actions as genocidal. The march had been planned for October 7 but was postponed due to Hurricane Milton, which affected Cuba and Florida. Participants heard from Palestinian students, including one who spoke about the lack of peace and ongoing aggression in Gaza and the West Bank.

In June, Cuba joined a lawsuit filed by South Africa against Israel at the International Court of Justice over its military offensive in Gaza. The Caribbean island’s participation in the legal action was part of its ongoing support for Palestinians in their struggle for sovereignty and freedom. The lawsuit sought to hold Israel accountable for its actions in Gaza and bring international attention to the ongoing conflict and humanitarian crisis in the region. Cuba’s involvement in the lawsuit demonstrated its commitment to supporting Palestinians in their quest for justice and autonomy.
