In an op-ed for WSJ, Biden urges immediate passage of aid bills: ‘We must not allow Putin to triumph’

U.S. President Joe Biden has emphasized the urgent need for military aid for Ukraine and Israel in an op-ed published on April 17. He called for “leadership and courage” in Washington to support these countries, as they are both facing threats from aggressive adversaries. Biden highlighted the importance of not abandoning allies like Ukraine and Israel in the face of external threats. The Senate passed a $95 billion foreign aid bill for these countries in February, but the House is facing resistance from hardline Republicans who oppose assistance for Ukraine. Despite this opposition, House Speaker Mike Johnson announced plans to move forward with a vote on foreign aid bills for Israel, Ukraine, and Taiwan.

The situation in Ukraine has been rapidly deteriorating due to the lack of military aid, with Russian President Vladimir Putin seeking to subjugate the Ukrainian people and absorb their nation into a new Russian empire. On the other hand, the government of Iran aims to destroy Israel forever, posing a threat to the world’s only Jewish state. The refusal to provide assistance to Kyiv is causing concern among lawmakers, as the need for support for Ukraine is becoming increasingly urgent. Biden stressed the importance of standing with Ukraine and Israel in the face of their adversaries, calling for a united effort to provide the necessary aid to these countries.

Despite the resistance from hardline Republicans in the House, Johnson announced that a vote on foreign aid bills for Israel, Ukraine, and Taiwan will take place on April 20. This decision was made despite pressure from those who oppose assistance for Ukraine altogether. Johnson’s plan to hold a vote on the aid bills reflects a commitment to supporting these countries in their time of need. The announcement comes after Biden’s op-ed urging Washington to show leadership and courage in providing military aid to Ukraine and Israel. The vote on the foreign aid bills will be a crucial step in determining the level of support these countries will receive from the United States.

The bill for foreign aid to Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan has been stalled in the House due to political wrangling and opposition from some Republican lawmakers. Johnson’s decision to push forward with a vote on these aid bills signifies a willingness to prioritize the needs of these countries despite internal challenges. The upcoming vote will be a test of the House’s commitment to supporting allies like Ukraine and Israel in the face of external threats. Biden’s call for “leadership and courage” in Washington echoes the urgency of the situation and the importance of standing with allies during times of crisis. The outcome of the vote will have significant implications for the future of U.S. foreign policy and its relationships with key allies in the region.
