Improved availability of marijuana could transform healthcare for older adults

Almost 80,000 Americans are turning 65 each week, marking the beginning of a period where more people in the United States will reach retirement age than ever before. This surge in the senior population will lead to increased demand for medical care and enrollment in programs such as Medicare, posing significant challenges for the healthcare system. The recent decision by the Biden administration to move towards reclassifying marijuana from a Schedule I to a Schedule III drug presents an opportunity to incorporate medical cannabis into the care of older Americans, potentially offering an alternative to traditional prescription painkillers and reducing healthcare costs.

Many seniors are already turning to cannabis as a solution for age-related conditions like chronic pain, anxiety, insomnia, and neurodegenerative disorders. Integrating medical cannabis into senior health programs could provide a transformative solution for this population, which often faces high healthcare costs and reliance on multiple prescription medications. Studies have shown that medical cannabis can be more cost-effective and have positive impacts on seniors’ health. Rescheduling marijuana could not only benefit the youth vote but also help older voters who are in need of healthcare solutions like medical cannabis.

While the potential benefits of medical cannabis for seniors are clear, there are challenges to integrating it into existing healthcare programs like Medicare Advantage. Developing new research and generating data are necessary steps before medical cannabis can be covered by federal programs. Establishing a demonstration program in a state that allows for medical cannabis could provide valuable insights and data on the use of cannabis-based therapies among seniors, leading to the development of clinical guidance and protocols for safe and effective use.

The use of medical cannabis in states where it is legal has shown promising results, with reductions in the use of painkillers and potential cost savings. Integrating medical cannabis into senior healthcare programs could have a significant impact on improving outcomes for older Americans and reducing healthcare costs. As the senior population continues to grow rapidly, there is a pressing need for transformation in healthcare, with medical cannabis presenting a potential solution. Howard Kessler, an entrepreneur and philanthropist, has been advocating for the integration of medical cannabis into mainstream healthcare for seniors and believes that now is the time to act to revolutionize the senior healthcare landscape.
