The new Parliament, which will convene in mid-July, is seen as the result of the indications expressed by voters, marking an important milestone in European history from which important lessons can be learned. All political forces have called for a change in EU policies, agreeing that Europe must take a different direction than it has in the past. These were some of the key points made by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni in her speech to the Chamber of Deputies ahead of the upcoming European Council meeting in Brussels. The Senate also approved these communications, with 93 in favor and 54 opposed, following passage in the Chamber, where the majority resolution was approved with 178 in favor and 98 against.

“Italy cannot be ignored,” emphasized President Sergio Mattarella during a working breakfast at the Quirinale Palace prior to the European Council meeting, attended by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, Economy Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti, European Affairs Minister Raffaele Fitto, and Undersecretary to the Prime Minister Giovanbattista Fazzolari. Meloni reiterated the points made in her communications to Parliament and in her response to the Chamber, while sources from the Quirinale emphasize the central role played by Italy in Europe but note that it is not the President’s role to get involved in the political dynamics that underpin the ongoing negotiations for the allocation of new roles within the European Union.

The communication emphasizes the need for change within the EU, with all political forces agreeing that maintaining the status quo is not an option. The President’s remarks at the Quirinale underscore the importance of Italy’s role in Europe, but also seek to maintain neutrality when it comes to the internal politics of the EU. The upcoming European Council meeting in Brussels will be an opportunity for member states to discuss and negotiate the allocation of new roles within the EU, with Italy advocating for a different direction in EU policies.

The majority resolution, approved by both the Chamber and the Senate, reflects a shared desire for a different direction for Europe. President Mattarella’s comments at the Quirinale reiterated Italy’s central role in Europe, while also maintaining a neutral stance on the ongoing political dynamics within the EU.

Overall, the discussions and communications from Italian government officials reflect a unified stance on the need for change within the EU and the importance of Italy in shaping the future direction of Europe. The upcoming European Council meeting in Brussels will provide an opportunity for member states to discuss and negotiate the allocation of new roles within the EU, with Italy playing a prominent role in advocating for change. President Mattarella’s comments at the Quirinale underscore Italy’s central role in Europe, while also emphasizing the need for neutrality in political negotiations within the EU.
