Australian music promoter Garry Van Egmond passed away at 82, leaving behind a legacy as one of the nation’s most respected concert promoters. Known for his work with AC/DC and other major acts, he sold an impressive 35 million tickets across Australia, New Zealand, and Asia during his 40-year career. Some of his most notable tours include Dire Straits’ ‘Brothers In Arms Tour’ in 1986, which resulted in a Guinness World Record for ticket sales, and Bette Midler’s ‘The Divine Miss M Tour’ in 1978.

Garry’s son Christo, who worked alongside him in the family’s music touring company TEG Van Egmond, expressed his grief over the loss of a mentor and father figure. Christo highlighted Garry’s reputation as a gentleman in the industry, respected by artists, managers, and colleagues alike. The TEG Group CEO Geoff Jones also paid tribute to Garry, emphasizing his talent, integrity, and lasting impact on the music world. Friends and colleagues, including Nine showbiz guru Richard Wilkins and former Albert Music CEO Fifa Riccobono, mourned the loss of a great promoter and a wonderful human being.

In addition to his successful tours with major acts like AC/DC and Dire Straits, Garry was responsible for other notable performances, such as Jesus Christ Superstar in 1992 and Riverdance in 1997. His expertise and dedication were recognized globally when he was named the 5th top international promoter in the world by Billboard Magazine in 2010. Garry’s commitment to delivering exceptional live music experiences helped shape the industry and create lasting memories for fans across the region.

Garry’s impact on the music industry went beyond ticket sales and accolades. His influence extended to mentoring and guiding the next generation of music promoters, including his son Christo. Together, they worked on numerous successful events, creating a legacy that will endure for years to come. Garry’s reputation as a trustworthy and respected professional earned him admiration and fond memories from those who had the privilege to collaborate with him throughout his career.

The loss of Garry Van Egmond has left a significant void in the music world, with many expressing their sorrow and paying tribute to his contributions. His passing marks the end of an era for Australian music promotion, as his dedication, talent, and integrity exemplified the best of the industry. While Garry may no longer be with us, his legacy lives on through the countless unforgettable concerts and performances he brought to audiences worldwide. He will be remembered as a true pioneer and a remarkable individual who touched the lives of many through his passion for music and live entertainment.
