Tómasdóttir, a 55-year-old businesswoman and investor, was elected as the new president of Iceland in a largely ceremonial post with 34.3% of the vote. She led a field of candidates in which the top three finishers were all women, defeating former prime minister Katrin Jakobsdottir who gained 25.2% and Halla Hrund Logadottir who gained 15.5%. Tómasdóttir campaigned on being above party politics and focused on discussing important issues such as the impact of social media on mental health, tourism in Iceland, and the role of artificial intelligence. She is set to replace the current president, Gudni Johannesson, who chose not to seek re-election after serving two four-year terms in office. Tómasdóttir first gained prominence during the financial crisis as the co-founder of Audur Capital, a firm that survived the upheaval. Currently on leave as the chief executive of the non-profit B Team, which promotes workplace diversity and has offices in New York and London, she will begin her new role as president on August 1.

Iceland is known for being the most gender-equal country in the world, according to a World Economic Forum report in 2023. Tómasdóttir’s election to the presidency further solidifies this reputation, with all three top finishers in the election being women. Her victory marks a significant moment for gender equality in Iceland and serves as an inspiration for women across the country and beyond. Tómasdóttir’s focus on important issues such as the effect of social media on mental health, tourism, and artificial intelligence demonstrates her commitment to addressing pressing societal concerns and working towards positive change. Her background as a successful businesswoman and investor, as well as her leadership role in promoting workplace diversity, positions her well to lead Iceland as its new president.

Tómasdóttir’s election comes at a pivotal time for Iceland, as the country continues to navigate various challenges and opportunities on the global stage. Her status as a successful entrepreneur and advocate for diversity and inclusion brings a fresh perspective to the presidency, offering potential for new approaches to addressing key issues facing Icelandic society. With her experience in business and finance, Tómasdóttir brings a unique skill set to the role of president, which could prove valuable in shaping policies that support economic growth and social development. Her ability to lead with integrity and vision will be essential in guiding Iceland through the next phase of its journey.

As she prepares to assume office on August 1, Tómasdóttir faces a range of complex issues that will require thoughtful and strategic leadership. From managing the impact of social media on mental health to supporting sustainable tourism practices and navigating the implications of artificial intelligence, she will need to engage with a diverse set of stakeholders to find solutions that benefit all Icelanders. Tómasdóttir’s commitment to open discussions and collaborative decision-making positions her well to tackle these challenges and drive positive change in her new role. With her background in business and advocacy for workplace diversity, she brings a fresh perspective to the presidency that could pave the way for innovative policy solutions.

Overall, Tómasdóttir’s election as Iceland’s new president marks a historic moment for the country and a significant step forward for gender equality. Her victory reflects Iceland’s longstanding commitment to promoting diversity and inclusion, as well as its reputation as a global leader in gender equality. As she takes on the responsibilities of the presidency, Tómasdóttir has the opportunity to make a lasting impact on Icelandic society and shape its future direction. With her background in business, finance, and advocacy for workplace diversity, she brings a wealth of experience and expertise to the role, positioning her well to lead Iceland through its next chapter of growth and development. Her leadership will be crucial in navigating the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead and ensuring a prosperous and inclusive future for all Icelanders.
