I Rejected Man Utd’s Attempts to Sign Me Twice Because I’m Loyal to Arsenal

Sir Alex Ferguson attempted to sign Arsenal legend Tony Adams on two occasions, but the ex-England international stayed loyal to his boyhood club. Adams turned down Ferguson’s approaches after winning titles with Arsenal in 1991 and during the period of transition when Arsene Wenger took over in 1996. Despite attempts at tapping him up, Adams remained “Arsenal through and through,” rejecting the chance to join Manchester United. His loyalty to Arsenal saw him win four league titles, three FA Cups, two League Cups, and a European Cup Winners’ Cup.

Born in Romford and raised in Dagenham, Adams joined Arsenal’s academy as a teenager and went on to become a club legend, retiring after making 672 appearances for the Gunners. Ferguson’s approach to sign Adams in 1991 was facilitated by Bryan Robson during an England national team get-together. However, Adams declined the move, citing his unwavering commitment to Arsenal. When Ferguson made a second attempt in 1996, after Adams had stopped drinking and Wenger was taking over as Arsenal manager, the legendary defender once again turned down United to stay at his beloved club.

Adams’ stance on maintaining his loyalty to Arsenal was evident throughout his career, unlike some players who eventually did move to United to seek success. Players like Robin van Persie and Alexis Sanchez made successful moves to Old Trafford after leaving Arsenal, winning titles there. However, Adams remained a rare breed of one-club man, retiring without further major titles but with his integrity intact. The former England international has since become a successful pundit, reflecting on his career and the decisions that defined his legacy.

The unsuccessful endeavors of Ferguson to sign Adams underscore the fierce rivalry between Manchester United and Arsenal during the Premier League era. Despite Ferguson’s reputation for poaching key players from rival teams, Adams stood his ground and chose to remain loyal to Arsenal, where he had built his legacy. His decision to reject Manchester United’s advances on two occasions solidified his status as an iconic figure at Arsenal and a respected figure in English football.

Adams’ contributions to Arsenal and his unwavering loyalty to the club have endeared him to fans and established his legacy as one of the greatest defenders in Premier League history. His rejection of offers from Manchester United not only symbolized his dedication to the Gunners but also highlighted the intensity of the rivalry between the two clubs. While other players may have succumbed to lucrative offers from United, Adams proudly wore the Arsenal shirt throughout his career, leaving a lasting impact on the club and the fans who revered him.
