“I Can’t Just Start Shooting’: Feral Pigs Causing Havoc in Texas Suburb

A suburb of Irving, Texas is dealing with a pack of feral hogs causing chaos by tearing up landscaping and rummaging through trash. Locals are frustrated with the situation and are waiting for their local government to take action instead of resorting to violence. The hogs have been caught on camera and residents are finding ways to scare them off including using slingshots and loud noises.

The City of Irving has hired a contractor to handle the issue of the invasive feral hogs, which are reproducing at a rapid rate. Feral hogs engage in destructive behavior known as “rooting” where they dig up the ground for food and sometimes for fun. These beasts are known to not only cause economic damage but also pose a threat to humans and pets. Feral hogs cause an estimated $400 million in damage annually in Texas and $1.4 billion nationally.

In an effort to scare off the feral hogs, residents are using creative methods such as slingshots and loud noises. One homeowner mentioned that he initially thought about shooting the pigs but refrained from doing so since he lives in a neighborhood. Feral hogs in the Lone Star State have been a longstanding issue, and they are known for attacking humans and pets along with causing significant economic damage.

A Texas man in a wheelchair was forced to fend off a pack of wild hogs with an airsoft gun back in November. These hogs were also terrorizing his neighborhood and had even killed families’ pets. The man used a combination of an LED light and airsoft gun to scare the pigs away, emphasizing the importance of not confronting or cornering the hogs to avoid any dangerous situations. Feral hogs are a serious problem in Texas and nationally, causing millions of dollars in damage every year.

The situation in Irving, Texas highlights the ongoing challenge of feral hogs and the need for effective solutions to manage their population and prevent damage. Residents are living in fear of the hogs causing harm to their property and pets. The local government’s hiring of a contractor to handle the feral hog problem is a step in the right direction, but more needs to be done to address the issue and protect the community.

Ultimately, the presence of feral hogs in suburbs like Irving, Texas is a reminder of the impact of invasive species and the need for effective wildlife management strategies. The destructive behavior and rapid reproduction rate of feral hogs make them a serious threat to property, pets, and even human safety. Residents are justified in their frustration with the situation and are looking to local authorities for assistance in addressing the feral hog problem.
