The President of the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office (TURKPATENT), Muhammed Zeki Durak, provided information on products currently undergoing registration processes in the EU. Durak mentioned that under the leadership of the Ministry of Industry and Technology, an “international geographical indication mobilization” has been initiated. He stated that they are expecting the registration of the Hüyük strawberry and Söke cotton, which have been applied for.
Durak noted that they have 21 registered products and the application processes for 51 others are ongoing.

Durak further stated that they continue to receive good news about geographical indications from the EU. He mentioned that the Söke cotton, one of the pearls of Aydın, and the valuable product of Konya, the Hüyük strawberry – for which TURKPATENT has prepared an application within the scope of the international geographical indication mobilization initiated by the Ministry of Industry and Technology – will be registered in the EU. Two of their geographical indications deemed suitable by the EU Commission will be registered in the Official Journal of the EU after the 3-month objection period. As of today, they have 21 geographical indications registered in the EU, while the processes for 51 of their applications in the announcement phase are ongoing.

The Ministry of Industry and Technology has laid special emphasis on the importance of protecting and promoting Turkish products, especially through geographical indications. Through the efforts of TURKPATENT and the ministry, several Turkish products have already been registered in the EU and more are in the process of being registered. This not only ensures the authenticity and quality of Turkish products but also helps in boosting their export potential and market value.

The registration of geographical indications in the EU is a significant step for Turkish products as it provides them with protection against imitation and misuse while also signaling to consumers about the quality and uniqueness of these products. The process also helps in creating new opportunities for Turkish producers in international markets and enables them to establish a stronger presence globally. With ongoing efforts and collaborations between TURKPATENT, the Ministry of Industry and Technology, and other relevant stakeholders, the number of Turkish products registered under geographical indications in the EU is expected to increase, further strengthening the country’s position in the global market.

In conclusion, the progress made in registering Turkish products under geographical indications in the EU reflects the commitment of the Turkish government to promote and protect its rich cultural heritage and products. With the support of TURKPATENT and the Ministry of Industry and Technology, Turkish producers are able to showcase their products on an international platform and gain recognition for their quality and authenticity. This not only benefits the producers but also contributes to the overall growth and development of Turkey’s economy, making Turkish products more competitive and desirable in the global marketplace.
