The Iran-aligned Houthi militia in Yemen is offering a place for students suspended from universities in the United States for staging anti-Israeli protests. Students across the U.S. have been demonstrating against Israel’s actions in Gaza for months, calling on President Joe Biden to do more to stop the conflict. Many schools, including Ivy League Columbia University, have called in police to quell the protests. Sanaa University, run by the Houthis, has offered scholarships to these students and expressed support for their humanitarian position.

Sanaa University released a statement condemning the suppression of freedom of expression faced by academics and students in the U.S. and Europe. The university expressed solidarity with these students and offered them the opportunity to continue their studies in Yemen. The Houthi militia has been disrupting global shipping in solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza, leading to the U.S. and Britain designating them as a terrorist group. Despite the offer of education for U.S. students, the gesture has been met with sarcasm by some Yemenis on social media.

The conflict in Gaza has led to widespread protests by students in the U.S., demanding more action from the Biden administration to stop the bloodshed. They have also called for schools to divest from companies that support Israel’s government. The offer of scholarships by the Houthi militia to suspended students highlights the global reach and impact of the Gaza conflict. While the gesture has been met with skepticism and ridicule, it underscores the gravity of the situation and the widespread support for Palestinians in their fight for justice.

The board of Sanaa University has publicly expressed support for the students in the U.S. and Europe who have been suspended for their activism on behalf of Palestinians. The university condemned the suppression of freedom of expression faced by these students and welcomed them to continue their studies in Yemen. This offer comes amidst the ongoing conflict in Gaza, which has sparked protests and calls for action around the world. The Houthi militia, by extending this offer, is emphasizing its support for the Palestinian cause and its commitment to fighting alongside them.

The return of the Houthi militia to the list of terrorist groups by the U.S. and Britain highlights the complexity of the conflict in Yemen and the broader Middle East region. The militia’s disruption of global shipping has had far-reaching effects on the economy and has drawn attention to their tactics in support of Palestinians in Gaza. The offer of scholarships to U.S. students suspended for their activism adds another layer to the conflict, underscoring the global impact and interconnectedness of issues in the region. Despite the skepticism and sarcasm, the gesture serves as a reminder of the solidarity and support for Palestinians in their struggle for justice and freedom.
