Prom season is fast approaching, and the Duck tape brand has announced its 24th annual Stuck at Prom scholarship contest, offering two winners the chance to receive $15,000 for creating their prom attire out of Duck tape. Students from the U.S. and Canada can participate by crafting original prom dresses or tuxedos out of the tape, taking high-quality photos, and submitting their entries online. In addition to the grand prize scholarship money, four runner-ups in each category will receive $1,000 and a Duck brand prize pack worth $100. New judges’ choice awards have been introduced this year, including categories such as Runway Worthy, Most Inspiring, and Trust E.’s Choice.

Kerry Haugh, director of product marketing at Shurtape Technologies, the company that markets the Duck brand, expressed excitement for this year’s competition, highlighting the increased rewards and the new categories allowing teens more opportunities to showcase their creativity and style. The deadline for submissions is June 5th, after which a panel of judges will narrow down the finalists to a top 10 list by June 19th. The public will have the chance to vote for their favorite creations from June 26th to July 10th, with the winners being announced on July 17th. Last year, teens from California and Utah won the top prizes for their unique and creative prom attire made entirely out of Duck tape.

Karla Tejeda from Los Angeles, California, shared her experience of spending 120 hours creating her winning dress out of 14 rolls of Duck tape, describing it as a challenging process that involved trial and error. She used her grand prize winnings to help fund her college education. Ian Rojas from Taylorsville, Utah, also put in tremendous effort by utilizing 11 rolls of Duck tape and over 57 hours to create his prom tux. Inspired by the ancient cultures of the Aztecs and Mayans, he aimed to blend their culture with the elegance of prom wear. Rojas expressed his joy upon being selected as the winner of the best tux grand prize in 2023.

The Stuck at Prom scholarship contest has awarded over half a million dollars in scholarship money since its inception in 2001, providing talented students with an opportunity to be recognized for their creativity and style. The deadline for submissions this year is June 5th, with finalists being announced on June 19th and winners revealed on July 17th. The public will have the chance to vote for their favorite creations from June 26th to July 10th. Anyone interested in participating can find more information on how to submit their prom attire creation on the Duck brand website. The contest aims to support the creative endeavors of high school and home school students while offering substantial scholarship awards for their unique Duck tape creations.
