Here’s why Americans are yearning for more outdoor time than ever

Research has revealed that Americans need an average of 67 minutes outside every day to feel their best. A poll of 2,000 adults found that a record number of respondents value maximizing their time in the great outdoors. People who spend time outside noted that it was relaxing, improved their mood, and left them with a clearer head. Conversely, spending too much time indoors led to feelings of depression, anxiety, and loneliness according to a survey conducted by Talker Research on behalf of RVshare.

The survey also found that six in 10 respondents reported feeling stir-crazy after spending too much time indoors, with the average threshold being 10.5 hours. Bad weather that prevented outdoor activities resulted in negative feelings such as disappointment, frustration, and annoyance among respondents. RVshare’s CEO Jon Gray emphasized the importance of breaking through the four walls and engaging in outdoor adventures for physical and mental benefits during Mental Health Awareness Month in May.

Nearly 60% of respondents reported that their favorite outdoor activities benefited their mental health as well as their physical health. A majority of Americans viewed travel as a form of self-care, with four in 10 stating that they needed to escape or travel at least once every six months. The COVID-19 pandemic has changed travel preferences, with more people opting for nature-based vacations and outdoor activities. An overwhelming 83% of respondents believed that outdoor-centric travel had a positive impact on American lives.

The research highlighted the importance of spending time in nature and engaging in outdoor activities during travel for both physical and mental well-being. Activities such as soaking up the sun, hiking new trails, and stargazing were noted to provide renewal, mental clarity, and a sense of freedom that comes from being outdoors. RVshare’s CEO emphasized the need to incorporate outdoor experiences into everyday lives and travel plans. The survey showed that outdoor activities play a significant role in maintaining mental health and overall well-being for many Americans.
