The woman and the two men involved in the incident did not respond to requests for comment, and the person jumping up and down to simulate an ape has not been identified. Members of the crowd also chanted “Lock her up!” as the woman was guided away by police. The racial elements of the encounter brought attention to Mississippi’s history of racism, including past efforts to forcibly repatriate all Black people to Africa and riots against the admission of Black students to the university in 1962.
