Vice President Harris has unveiled a new agenda aimed at boosting the financial and career prospects of Black men, as polls show that former President Trump is gaining support among this demographic. The “Opportunity Agenda for Black Men” includes proposals to provide loans to Black entrepreneurs, promote education and training programs, protect investments in cryptocurrency, address health disparities, and create opportunities in the marijuana industry. The agenda is designed to equip Black men with the tools needed to succeed and build wealth, in contrast to what the campaign characterizes as a lack of support from the Trump administration.
Former Louisiana Rep. Cedric Richmond, a national co-chair of the Harris campaign, emphasized the importance of equipping Black men with resources to achieve their dreams and aspirations. The campaign plans to hold “Black Men Huddle Up” events with celebrities, influencers, and activists in key battleground states, as well as an “Economic Freedom Talk” series with Black business owners. The effort is seen as crucial in light of concerns about declining support among Black men, especially younger voters, for Harris. With the race between Harris and Trump in key battleground states being closely contested, any erosion of support among Black voters could have significant implications for the vice president’s electoral prospects.
Former President Obama, speaking at a Harris campaign office in Pittsburgh, expressed frustration at the lack of enthusiasm among Black male voters for Harris, contrasting it with the level of support he enjoyed as the first Black president in 2008. Obama directly addressed Black men, suggesting that hesitations about Harris’s candidacy may stem from discomfort with the idea of a female president. The former president’s remarks drew criticism from supporters of Trump, who viewed Obama’s comments as reductionist and insulting. Some Democrats also took issue with Obama’s focus on Black male voters, arguing that other demographic groups supporting Trump had not been similarly called out for their choices.
In an effort to appeal to Black voters, Harris is scheduled to participate in a town hall discussion with radio host Charlamagne Tha God in Detroit, Michigan. The event is part of ongoing outreach efforts by the Harris campaign to engage with Black communities and address concerns and priorities that are important to them. The campaign’s strategic use of events with prominent Black figures, such as celebrities and business owners, underscores the significance of the Black vote in key battleground states and the impact it could have on the outcome of the election.
As the campaign intensifies in the final weeks leading up to Election Day, the Harris campaign is making a concerted effort to highlight the Opportunity Agenda for Black Men and mobilize support among Black voters.
