Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign has agreed to the rules set by ABC News for the upcoming presidential debate against former President Donald Trump. The campaign agreed to keep the microphones muted when a candidate is not speaking, which could potentially shield Trump from direct exchanges with Harris. The campaign also received assurances from ABC News on how crosstalk would be handled, with the microphones being unmuted in the case of significant crosstalk or if a candidate constantly interrupts their opponent. Despite their concerns, the Harris campaign accepted the rules proposed by ABC, including muted microphones, to avoid jeopardizing the debate.

In the June debate between President Biden and Trump, the Biden campaign had requested that the candidates’ microphones be muted when their opponent was speaking. Trump’s campaign opposed changing the rules for the September debate, but ultimately agreed to adhere to the same rules as the previous debate, which involved muted microphones. Trump expressed his preference for having the microphones unmuted but was willing to follow the agreed-upon rules. In a statement provided by a Trump campaign spokesperson, they expressed satisfaction that Harris and her team had finally accepted the rules they had originally proposed, emphasizing the importance of allowing both candidates to present their visions to the voters without interference or prior knowledge of questions.

The decision to mute the microphones during the debate has drawn mixed reactions from both campaigns, with Harris’ campaign expressing concerns about Trump being shielded from direct exchanges with the Vice President. Despite these concerns, the campaign accepted the rules to ensure that the debate would proceed as planned. Trump’s campaign, on the other hand, emphasized the importance of allowing both candidates to present their visions without any restrictions, highlighting the need for transparency and fairness in the debate format. Ultimately, both campaigns agreed to abide by the rules set by ABC News, including the use of muted microphones during the debate.

The back-and-forth over the debate rules reflects the ongoing tension between the two campaigns as they prepare for the upcoming presidential debate. The decision to mute the microphones during the debate has raised questions about how it will impact the candidates’ ability to engage in direct exchanges and present their competing visions to the voters. Despite concerns from the Harris campaign, both campaigns have agreed to follow the rules set by ABC News to ensure that the debate proceeds as planned. The upcoming debate will provide a platform for both candidates to articulate their positions and engage in a substantive discussion on key issues facing the nation.

As the debate approaches, both campaigns are gearing up to present their respective visions to the American people. The decision to mute the microphones during the debate has been a point of contention between the two campaigns, with Harris’ campaign expressing concerns about Trump being shielded from direct exchanges. However, both campaigns have ultimately agreed to abide by the rules set by ABC News to avoid jeopardizing the debate. The upcoming debate will be a crucial moment for both candidates to make their case to the voters and outline their respective plans for the future of the country.
