Hans-Georg Maaßen: Dispute over Video Shoot with Former Head of Domestic Intelligence in AfD Venue

The North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) state parliament has been embroiled in a controversy over a YouTube interview conducted in the AfD faction’s meeting room. The interview featured former head of the Office for the Protection of the Constitution, Hans-Georg Maaßen, who is now the leader of the Werteunion party, and AfD faction leader Martin Vincentz. NRW parliament president André Kuper has written a letter to Vincentz, demanding that the AfD delete the video as it violates the law. According to a parliament spokesperson, there is suspicion of an “abuse of usage rights” for the faction’s meeting room, leading Kuper to issue a warning to the AfD.

Kuper’s letter to the AfD reminded them that the faction’s meeting room is only meant for their own use and that any publicity efforts must clearly attribute to the faction. The video in question was uploaded by a businessman to his YouTube channel, where he regularly interviews politicians. The 82-minute long video, featuring the interview with Vincentz and Maaßen, was still online as of Wednesday morning. Kuper urged the AfD to comply with legal regulations and work towards having the video deleted by the businessman, citing concerns of “misuse” of the meeting room.

The AfD faction has stated that they are reviewing the situation legally in response to Kuper’s letter. The parliament president’s office sent a copy of the letter to the state audit office for review, a standard procedure in such cases. The AfD had allowed the YouTuber access to their meeting room for the interview, leading to allegations of improper use of the premises. The controversy surrounding the video has sparked debate within the NRW state parliament, with the AfD under scrutiny for their handling of the situation.

The incident highlights the ongoing tensions between the AfD and other political parties in Germany, as well as the increasing scrutiny over the party’s activities. The Werteunion, led by Maaßen, has also come under fire for its association with the AfD. The NRW parliament’s reaction to the video has raised questions about the boundaries of party members’ conduct and the use of parliamentary facilities. As the controversy unfolds, the AfD and other parties will need to navigate the legal and ethical implications of the situation to maintain transparency and accountability in political discourse.
