Governor of blue state signs bill to protect doctors from neighboring state’s restrictive abortion law: Criticizes it as ‘oppressive and hazardous’

Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom of California recently signed Senate Bill 233, allowing Arizona abortionists to temporarily evade a 160-year-old law that outlaws abortions in almost all circumstances. This law was reinstated by the Arizona Supreme Court earlier this year, making it a felony to provide or procure abortions. Newsom championed the bill with the state’s women’s caucus as a response to Arizona’s efforts to restrict abortion access. The bill allows Arizona abortionists to perform abortions on Arizonian women in California without facing penalties at home.

Senator Nancy Skinner, who authored SB 233, expressed her gratitude for the bill, stating that it allows Arizona women to receive the healthcare they need from their own doctors in California. The law protects Arizona doctors from facing 2 to 5 years in prison for performing abortions in Arizona. Newsom’s support of this bill aligns with his campaign for abortion rights on a national level, as demonstrated by an ad targeting Alabama Republicans who oppose a bill allowing women to seek abortions out of state. California has been at the forefront of expanding abortion access following the overturning of Roe v. Wade, with Newsom taking a proactive stance against attempts to restrict abortion in other states.

The Arizona Supreme Court’s ruling in April reinstated a nearly total abortion ban dating back to pre-statehood laws. This law criminalizes almost all forms of abortion, with an exception for cases where the mother’s life is at risk. Newsom’s signing of SB 233 allows Arizona abortionists to travel to California to perform abortions without facing penalties in their home state. The passing of the bill has been celebrated as a victory for reproductive rights advocates, with Skinner emphasizing California’s commitment to protecting reproductive freedom for all who need or provide essential care.

In response to the ongoing attacks on abortion rights in states like Tennessee, Idaho, and Oklahoma, Newsom has emphasized the need for real-time responses that are more assertive and proactive. He views efforts to restrict abortion access as threatening and advocates for strong actions to protect reproductive rights. California has taken a firm stance against laws that restrict abortion, evidenced by recent legislative decisions to expand access rather than restrict it. Newsom’s support for SB 233 reflects his commitment to standing against oppressive and dangerous attacks on women’s reproductive rights.

The passage of SB 233 in California serves as a lifeline for Arizona women seeking abortions in a state where restrictions make it nearly impossible. The bill offers a temporary solution for Arizona abortionists to provide essential healthcare to women in need without fear of criminal prosecution. In a political climate where abortion rights are under constant threat, actions taken by states like California to protect and preserve these rights are crucial. Newsom’s signing of SB 233 signifies a commitment to safeguarding reproductive freedom and ensuring that individuals have access to the essential care they need.
