GOP pushes back DHS Secretary Mayorkas’ impeachment trial to next week

House Speaker Mike Johnson has opted to delay the transmission of articles of impeachment against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas to the Senate until next week. This decision was made in response to Senate Republicans urging him to postpone sending the articles so that there is ample time for debate at the beginning of the week. Johnson’s delay also comes amidst threats from Senate Republicans to bring the upper chamber to a halt if a full trial on Mayorkas’ handling of border security is not conducted.

Senate Democrats, who currently control the chamber, were anticipated to quickly dismiss or table the two Mayorkas impeachment articles this week and move on to other matters. However, Republicans have been pushing for a full Senate trial focused on Mayorkas’ actions regarding border security. Some Republicans have warned Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer that if he does not agree to a full trial, they could initiate a procedural blockade on all Senate business going forward, potentially leading to chaos within the chamber.

The delayed transmission of the impeachment articles by Speaker Johnson will provide Senate Republicans with additional time to debate the articles and criticize the opposition’s dismissal of them. Senators such as Mike Lee have expressed gratitude for the delay, noting that it is better to conduct the trial at the beginning of a legislative week rather than at the end when members may be fatigued from travel. The GOP is preparing for a full trial, with impeachment managers drafting opening statements for the proceedings.

Senate Republicans are considering ways to inflict political pressure on Democrats, including the threat of a procedural blockade if a full trial on Mayorkas is not held. The potential for chaos within the Senate looms if all 100 senators do not agree to basic functions such as adjourning the chamber, as it typically runs on unanimous consent. Republicans, led by figures like Senator Ron Johnson, are determined to highlight what they perceive as the abuse of power by the current administration in this matter.

The delay in transmitting the articles of impeachment against Mayorkas provides an opportunity for Senate Republicans to continue their calls for a full trial and hold the opposition accountable for their handling of the matter. Republicans have spent the week demanding accountability and action, signaling a willingness to disrupt Senate operations if their demands are not met. Despite the delay, the GOP remains poised to proceed with a full Senate trial to address their concerns surrounding Mayorkas’ actions related to border security.
