Gio Urshela, the former New York Yankees player, is well-known for being part of one of John Sterling’s infamous home run calls during his time with the team. However, Urshela’s legacy extends beyond the baseball field, as he also became a member of the board of directors of the Christian Rivera Foundation. This foundation is based in New York and raises awareness and funds for people affected by Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG), a rare and inoperable brain stem tumor that primarily affects children between the ages of 2-10.
Started by John “Gungie” Rivera in 2012 in honor of his son Christian, who succumbed to the disease in 2009, the Christian Rivera Foundation has donated over $3 million to research and clinical trials for DIPG. The foundation funds the work of two New York oncologists, Dr. Mark Souweidane and Dr. Oren Becher, who are dedicated to finding a cure for this devastating disease. Despite the lack of federal funding, the foundation has seen some progress, with five survivors emerging since its inception.
One of the most recognizable members of the foundation’s board of directors is comedian and actor Keenan Thompson, who works tirelessly to raise money to fight DIPG alongside Urshela. Urshela, known for his generosity and commitment to the cause, has formed a close relationship with DIPG patient Maria Kuenster, a member of what Rivera calls “The One Percent Club” – patients who have survived with the disease for at least five years. Despite being traded to different teams, Urshela has remained in touch with Kuenster, providing her with much-needed support and positivity.
Urshela credits his Colombian upbringing for instilling in him the importance of giving back to those in need, especially as a professional athlete with a platform to make a difference. Despite a challenging season where he sustained a broken pelvis while playing for the Los Angeles Angels, Urshela has shown resilience and perseverance, signing a one-year contract with the Detroit Tigers and continuing his contributions to charitable efforts.
Throughout his baseball career, Urshela has demonstrated his commitment to helping others and making a positive impact on the lives of those facing adversity. His involvement with the Christian Rivera Foundation and dedication to supporting DIPG patients like Maria Kuenster exemplify Urshela’s character and compassion both on and off the field. As he continues to thrive with the Tigers, Urshela remains a shining example of using one’s platform for good and inspiring those around him to make a difference in the world.
