Gibraltar: A Shared History and a Future of Shared Prosperity

The mayor of San Roque, Juan Carlos Ruiz Boix, expresses his excitement over the possibility of signing a historic agreement between the EU and the UK regarding Gibraltar. This agreement would allow for the elimination of the border fence and the creation of a Shared Prosperity Zone between the eight municipalities of the Campo de Gibraltar region and the Rock of Gibraltar. The negotiations led by the Spanish government have brought us closer than ever to this milestone, which would have a significant impact on the economy and daily lives of thousands of workers who cross the border for employment.

Since the Brexit referendum in 2016, the Campo de Gibraltar region has been living with uncertainty about the consequences of the UK’s exit on their economy. With over 15,000 cross-border workers, including more than 10,000 Spanish workers, commuting to Gibraltar daily for work, the implications of Brexit have been a major concern. The New Year’s Eve Agreement signed on December 31, 2020, between the UK and Spain laid the groundwork for a historic shift in relations with Gibraltar, but it required further negotiation to finalize the agreement and ensure freedom of movement and trade without compromising Spain’s legal position.

The path to reaching this historic moment has not been easy, with obstacles and challenges along the way. Some have questioned the Spanish government’s proposed agreement, which includes the freedom of movement of people and goods, the removal of the border fence, and the shared use of the airport. However, if the agreement is finalized, it would mark a significant turning point in relations between Spain and Gibraltar, opening a new era of shared prosperity. It is essential for all political parties in Spain to support this historic opportunity and work towards a positive outcome.

The closure of the border fence by Franco in 1969 had a devastating impact on thousands of families in the region, causing economic and emotional trauma that lasted for years. Even after the border was reopened in 1982, the consequences were felt for a long time. Now, with a new historic agreement on the horizon, led by the efforts of the Spanish government, there is hope for a brighter future for the Campo de Gibraltar region and Gibraltar. The potential elimination of the border fence and the creation of a Shared Prosperity Zone would bring significant benefits to both sides.

Juan Carlos Ruiz Boix emphasizes the importance of this historic moment and the need for all parties to come together to support the agreement. As the mayor of San Roque and president of the Foreign Affairs Committee in the Congress of Deputies, he acknowledges the significance of this opportunity for the region and the potential for positive change in the relationship between Spain and Gibraltar. This new era of cooperation and shared prosperity offers hope for a better future for all involved, and it is crucial that everyone works together to ensure its success.
