Germany coach criticizes public broadcaster for suggesting team should have more white players

Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann has expressed shock over a survey conducted by German state broadcaster ARD, which asked participants if they would prefer more white players in the national soccer team. Nagelsmann, along with midfielder Joshua Kimmich, criticized the survey as “absolutely racist” and described it as “madness” for a public broadcaster to ask such a question. The survey found that 21% of the participants would prefer to see more players with white skin playing for Germany. Nagelsmann emphasized the need to be more inclusive and welcoming of diversity, especially considering the current global climate of displacement and migration due to various factors.

Nagelsmann highlighted the importance of a soccer team as a role model for showcasing how individuals from different cultures, religious backgrounds, and skin colors can come together to work towards a common goal. He expressed his disbelief at the hypocrisy of complaining about immigrants in one’s own country while simultaneously seeking to explore and experience other cultures through travel. Nagelsmann stressed that diversity should be embraced and celebrated, and expressed his solidarity with Kimmich’s stance on the issue. He reiterated his commitment to including players of all backgrounds in the national team and emphasized the need to focus on the sport and unity rather than divisive issues like race.

In line with Kimmich’s sentiments, Nagelsmann emphasized that he values all the players he has nominated for the national squad, regardless of their skin color. He asserted that the team is inclusive and open to all individuals who can contribute their talent and passion for football. Nagelsmann stated that the team is preparing for the upcoming European Championship with a focus on unity and shared goals, emphasizing that the tournament is an opportunity for players from all backgrounds to come together and represent their country. He expressed his hope that such divisive surveys would not be conducted in the future, underscoring the importance of unity and inclusivity in sports.

Germany is gearing up for the Euro 2024 tournament with a series of warm-up games, including a match against Ukraine on Monday. Their upcoming friendlies against Greece and Scotland will provide an opportunity for the team to fine-tune their preparations before the tournament kicks off. Germany is set to host the opening match on June 14 against Scotland in Munich, followed by games against Hungary in Stuttgart and Switzerland in Frankfurt. As the host nation, Germany aims to make a strong showing at the European Championship, showcasing the talent and diversity of their national team.
