Georgia to honor Jimmy Carter today with a procession and service

The content discusses the six days of events planned to honor former President Jimmy Carter following his death at the age of 100. The events begin with a procession in his hometown of Plains, Georgia, tributes at the state Capitol, and a private service at the Carter Center in Atlanta. Carter, who served as a Democrat and was elected president in 1976, continued his passion for humanitarian work post-presidency and was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts in advancing international peace, democracy, and human rights. His grandson, Jason Carter, described him as a regular guy with a remarkable American story.

The events on Saturday start with Carter’s family arriving at a medical center in Americus, Georgia, where his casket is carried to the hearse by Secret Service agents before a motorcade departs for Plains. The motorcade will pause at the farm where Carter grew up, and a bell will be rung 39 times in honor of his status as the 39th president. The motorcade will then travel to the state Capitol in Atlanta, where a moment of silence will be held, led by several dignitaries, in honor of Carter. An arrival ceremony and private service will follow at the Carter Center.

Carter’s body will remain in repose at the Carter Center until Tuesday, with a planned departure ceremony before being transported to Washington, D.C. for additional ceremonies. The funeral procession will stop at the U.S. Navy Memorial and then proceed to the U.S. Capitol, where Carter will lie in state in the Rotunda. Members of Congress and the public will have an opportunity to pay their respects before a state funeral at the Washington National Cathedral. His remains will be returned to Georgia for a private funeral service at a church in Plains, where he taught Sunday school for many years.

Following the private funeral, there will be a motorcade through Plains to Carter’s home, where he will be buried beside his wife, Rosalynn. A missing man formation flyover conducted by the U.S. Navy will honor him, and a private burial will take place. The six days of events honoring Carter culminate in the celebration of his life, legacy, and contributions to the country and the world. The ceremonies pay tribute to his service, character, and impact as a dedicated public servant and humanitarian. Members of the public, dignitaries, and loved ones come together to honor and remember his life and the indelible mark he left on American history.
