Georgia Republicans select Amy Kremer, organizer of pro-Trump rally on Jan. 6, for position on the RNC.

Georgia Republicans elected conservative activist Amy Kremer to the Republican National Committee despite objections from party leaders and incumbents. Kremer played a significant role in organizing the pro-Trump rally on Jan. 6, 2021, that resulted in a mob storming the U.S. Capitol. She emphasized the need for someone willing to fight for the grassroots and support Donald Trump, highlighting the desire for confrontation within the party.

Although Kremer was not part of the mob that stormed the Capitol, her group obtained the permit for the “Save America” rally where Trump urged his supporters to “fight like hell.” She was actively involved in fundraising for the “Stop the Steal” movement, promoting the false claim that Biden’s victory was stolen. Party leaders had reservations about Kremer, citing unpaid fines from the Federal Election Commission and her association with controversial movements.

Despite criticisms and attacks against him, incumbent Committeeman Jason Thompson was reelected by delegates at the convention. Thompson faced opposition due to his family’s connections to Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, who defended the 2020 election results that favored Biden. Thompson pledged to stand against forces seeking to destroy America and expressed confidence in winning Georgia for President Trump.

Calls for unity within the Republican Party were echoed by several speakers at the convention, including U.S. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene. Greene emphasized the importance of setting aside internal divisions to focus on winning in November. Gov. Brian Kemp, who has faced backlash from Trump and party leaders, did not attend the convention, further highlighting the fractures within the party. However, some signs of unity were shown by Kemp allies and state lawmakers who spoke at the event.

Party Chairman Josh McKoon highlighted efforts to bring elected officials back to the table and unite the party. Republicans identified inflation and immigration as key issues that could help them win over undecided voters who abstained in the 2020 election or voted for Biden. Georgia Labor Commissioner Bruce Thompson emphasized the importance of discussing issues that resonate with every American, such as economic concerns. The party aims to focus on these topics to garner support and achieve success in future elections.
